Victor Wembanyama Signs $252 Million Contract with Spurs
Victor Wembanyama has agreed to a standard 25% maximum salary contract worth $252 million with the San Antonio Spurs. This decision allows the Spurs greater financial flexibility, as he could have opted for a supermax deal of 30% with escalating clauses, potentially reaching $303 million. Under the chosen contract, Wembanyama will earn $43.5 million in the 2027-2028 season, the first year of the deal, instead of the $52.2 million he would have received under the 30% limit.
Earlier, Wembanyama expressed his commitment on social media, stating, "Spurs family, I'm here to stay. Whatever it takes."
The young phenom had an exceptional 2025-26 season, earning unanimous Defensive Player of the Year honors. He was also selected to the All-NBA First Team and finished third in MVP voting, trailing Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Oklahoma City and Nikola Jokic of Denver.
Wembanyama was instrumental in leading the Spurs to a 62-20 record last season, marking the team's first Finals appearance since their fifth championship in 2014. In 64 games, he averaged a career-high 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, a league-leading 3.1 blocks, and 1.00 steal per game in just 29.2 minutes of action.
Looking ahead, Victor Wembanyama is expected to join the French national team for their August schedule, with games against Slovenia in Paris-Bercy on August 27th and Sweden on August 30th.
