Jamal Mashburn and American Investors Poised to Acquire AS Monaco
Jamal Mashburn, a 53-year-old former NBA player (1993-2004) who transitioned into business after a career-ending knee injury, is reportedly leading a group of American investors in a bid to acquire the French basketball club AS Monaco.
This is not Mashburn's first foray into basketball club ownership. In 2021, he was involved in an attempt to purchase Élan Béarnais Pau-Lacq-Orthez, alongside notable figures like Rick Pitino and Stu Jackson, through the American fund CounterPointe Sports Group. However, that deal ultimately fell through.
The proposed investment from the American investors is estimated to be around €10 million. This influx of capital is crucial as AS Monaco has reportedly begun settling its debts with service providers, including the sports agency BeoBasket, and is looking to re-enter the transfer market.
The financial stabilization of the club from the Principality is considered urgent. AS Monaco is scheduled to appear before the FFBB appeals commission on July 24th. This commission will determine the club's fate regarding its continued participation in the French professional league.
